Obviously tonsils is a fairly common surgery for kids - but having them out at such a young age was a bit scary but overall everything went really well and the recovery was better than I thought it would be (that being said, I never want to do that again!)

Pre-surgery tonsil pic (NOT inflamed, just an average day. This is how big her tonsils were every.single.day)
Backing up to the beginning, I took Bailey to the ENT a few months ago because of her speech delay. I was wondering if there was fluid trapped in her ears. She had a ton of ear infections when she was between 1 and 2, but none between 2 and 3. Honestly, she probably should have had tubes in. She had five in a row over three months. But anyway. I also wanted to ask the ENT about her snoring because Bailey snores like a grown man (or did, not now!) and wakes up pretty frequently at night still. Would you like to hear how bad her snoring was? I made a recording for the ENT (and he diagnosed her with sleep apnea based on the video):

Anyway, the ENT resident came in and I told him my concerns. He asked Bailey to open her mouth and say "ah". Without hesitation he said "those need to come out." Then he disappeared to get the attendee doctor who would do the surgery. He looked at her tonsils and said they same thing. He said she had giant preemie tonsils. Is that a thing? Apparently yes.

They wanted to schedule the surgery ASAP but between my brother's wedding and a few other things it wasn't going to happen. So we put it off until July.
Judge me ha. My baby has surgery, she can get some extra toys. Per the advice of the "your child is going to have surgery" booklet the Cleveland Clinic gave us, I told Bailey about the surgery a few days before. I explained to Brooklyn and Bailey that Bailey was going to go to the hospital and have surgery to make her feel better. She would be sick for a little bit, but then she would feel much better. Before I can say all that - all I have said is that Bailey is going to the hospital to have surgery - Brooklyn yells "no, me!" To which Bailey responds, "no, me!" and so on. Morgan continued to eat her dinner, uninterested.

The morning of, we woke Bailey up a little early. My parents came over to take the other girls to daycare. We got to the main campus of Cleveland Clinic around 7:15 am. Bailey was very happy thinking she was having a fun adventure with mom and dad. We did all the paperwork and checked in. They took us back to a pre-surgery room and Bailey was starting to get a bit iffy and suspicious. A child advocate person came in and was WONDERFUL. She had bubbles so was instantly Bailey's new best friend. She also had the mask they would use to put Bailey under and was showing her how it worked. She let Bailey pick out flavored chapstick (she picked the Belle kind of course) so the mask would not smell like plastic. I somehow coaxed her into the hospital gown (though she refused to take her shoes off) and put my own scrubs on. Then the doctors, aides, nurses, anesthesiologist all came into the room to take her down to surgery. This is about the point where Bailey was like oh hell no and started to get really panicky. I carried her down to the operating room, her unease growing. I sat in the chair with her as they put the mask over her face. This was the worst 60 seconds. I was crying. Bailey was fighting the mask and screaming. The nurse told me to sing to her to calm her down. I could barely choke out a sound. "What is her favorite song?" they asked. "Hush little baby," I managed to say. And the nurses sang to her while the mask did it's work and she was out.
The surgery itself went pretty fast - maybe 45 minutes or so? We went into the recovery room and she was still out. She slowly started stirring after 30 minutes maybe. Right when kids come out of anesthesia they are confused, disorientated and a little hostile. She was not a happy girl. I laid in the bed with her. She actually chugged four mini apple juice containers within that first hour which is really awesome. She refused Popsicles. I learned that Bailey does not like Popsicles, despite my careful stocking of our freezer ahead of time.
Bailey did awesome that first day. She wanted lots and lots of ice cream. She even ate macaroni and cheese for lunch. Darren left to pick up Brooklyn and Morgan and I stayed overnight with Bailey. The children's unit was really nice. They have tons of toys and DVDs you can use, as well as books that you keep (they can't be cleaned). But Bailey was obsessed with the salt water fish tank that had Dory and Nemo fish in it. We spent a lot of time sitting looking at fish. I am also thought it would be hard for Brooklyn and Bailey to be away from each other overnight. Figure they have never slept more than maybe ten feet apart from each other. Darren kept Brooklyn up a little later so she went down pretty easy. Bailey had a bit of a harder time falling asleep. We snuggled in the hospital bed and watched a princess DVD until around ten. She did good all night but woke up right around medicine time crying.

My main tip for anyone with a kid recovering from T&A surgery is to stay on top of the meds. Every three hours means every three hours. Do this until about day 11 or 12 post surgery. Set your alarm at night. Alternate Tylonel and Motrin.

The third day seemed harder than the first two. She wouldn't really eat or drink anything. And I mean anything. No more ice cream. No juice. Clearly no Popsicles. No Jell-o. No pudding. No mac and cheese. No water. I finally got her to drink a little milk. She really didn't eat or drink much for a few days. She seemed to perk up around days 5-6 and then crashed some when the scabs fell off around days. She would be fine 80 percent of the time (like super happy and playing) but then very upset and throwing tantrums for the other 20 percent (like kicking and just screaming, which she NEVER does, but was obviously in pain). Brooklyn was very sweet to her!
So she's fully recovered now. I was hoping for a miraculous improvement in speech but she seems about the same. We had her first speech therapy session post surgery and are shifting the focus from getting her to say anything (now that she has a good vocab and uses sentences) to focusing on her articulation. I still think she has apraxia of speech but for now the SLP wants to focus on her articulation before we label it as anything. Right now we are focusing on the P sound. Bailey can't say P's at the beginning of words (though she can say the P in up for example). She is unable to close her mouth to form the P used at the beginning of the word. So instead of pie she just says "eye." or "ur-el" instead of purple.

Typically the P is mastered at age 2. She does have the M down though! I don't want to diminish her progress. For a kid that said almost nothing in March to the progress she's made now is tremendous. I just feel awful as she's communicating now that it's so difficult to understand her. There is nothing worse than your 3 year old repeating the same sentence over and over again and you just can't understand her. We try very hard to never say, "I can't understand you," and figure out with context clues what she wants, or ask her to show us. But it breaks my heart when she starts crying and getting upset because we can't understand her. (As a side note, Brooklyn is doing awesome too with her speech. She is much more clear and easy to understand, but still a bit behind her peers in how she uses her language.) Anyway, we only worked on M and P at this last session, but here's when kids typically master specific letter sounds:
Your never ending energy always brings a smile to our face through your frequent requests to "get me" (aka chase me) or "dance with me." I love watching you interact with your sisters and hearing "I come baby!" as you thunder up the stairs to rescue Morgan when she wakes up from a nap, or "Bail, cookie for you!" when you faithfully deliver Bailey her promised cookie. Your current obsessions include sleeping beauty ("sleeping beauty first!"), Princess Sophia, taking various small objects like plastic forks, eggs and frying pans to bed or trying to sneak them into daycare, drawing unique pictures with little objects (birds? Letters?) scattered throughout, running everywhere - sometimes tripping -and getting back up without missing a beat while earning an impressive amount of bruises all over your body (and a rock in your lip), pretend and real cooking/baking, swings and the park, 5 Little Ducks song and too many others to list. You have such a vivid imagination and I love watching your elaborate play, whether it's the alligator or giraffe chasing someone or the mommy pony rescuing the baby pony after falling off the train. You are always so interested in new things ("what's dat mom?!? What's dat mom!?!) and notice the smallest details like the page numbers in the book. Your current obsessions include Belle, figurines, playing hide and go seek but getting so excited that you pop out of your hiding place before being found laughing like crazy, the cat ("hi meow! No meow!"), riding on dad's shoulders, the pirate episode of bubble guppies(arrr!), helping mom in the kitchen, launching yourself off the picnic table whether someone is ready to catch you or not, whales and baby beluga song, slides, etc etc etc. I love watching the incredible bond between you and Brooklyn (um the sunflower patch hand holding, can it get any cuter?) and melt when you bring Morgan toys or snuggle with her. Never lose your sunny personality!

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2256680633887350481.post-90901156808687569902016-07-11T13:37:00.001-07:002016-07-11T13:37:57.535-07:00Dress up closet
Completed a Pinterest inspired project for B&B for their bdays! The Help Me Grow program ends at age 3 and the IEP program takes over. IEP means "Individualized Education Program" which is basically a formal process for the school to evaluate and treat kids with any kind of special needs. This can range from very severe to very minor issues.

We took Brooklyn and Bailey in for an evaluation in May. My concern was that Bailey would qualify and Brooklyn would not. Obviously, I would prefer neither kid is on an IEP, but if only Bailey was, I was really nervous about Brooklyn being left behind at daycare and Bailey attending preschool for two hours by herself. The preschool program has "typical peers" (aka kids without any issues) and then kids with special needs, but the typical peers are chosen in December for the following year and we did not even think to have the kids entered into that. My plan was to just keep them in daycare till kindergarten and skip preschool altogether. Things change though!

Anyway so the evaluation. I thought there was no way the girls would split up from Darren and I as they are very shy and really don't like strangers. But the preschool teacher won them over instantly with promises of toys and the girls followed him into the room without a second glance back. We sat outside the classroom on tiny preschool chairs and filled out endless paperwork. Times two.

After the evaluation, we met briefly with the school psychologist and school speech and language pathologist (SLP). They said they had some concerns and would like to set up the formal meeting to go over the ETR (evaluation team report) and discuss if an IEP is needed.

Fast forward two weeks.

So both kids quality for an IEP for both speech and OT for fine motor skills. Did we know or have any concerns about their fine motor skills? Nope, that totally flew under the radar for me. Now that it's been brought up though, I can see their point.

For Bailey, they have concerns about her motor skills to produce sounds and that she is basically unintelligible. She'll be getting one on one speech for a half hour each week. Her fine motor skills were slightly delayed she she'll be getting extra help in a group setting each week. As the school's SLP was discussing her speech delays, I asked him if he thought she had apraxia of speech. This has been a concern of mine for a while. Here is the clinical definition:

Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is a motor speech disorder. Children with CAS have problems saying sounds, syllables, and words. This is not because of muscle weakness or paralysis. The brain has problems planning to move the body parts (e.g., lips, jaw, tongue) needed for speech. The child knows what he or she wants to say, but his/her brain has difficulty coordinating the muscle movements necessary to say those words. - http://www.asha.org/public/speech/disorders/ChildhoodApraxia/

The SLP said he's not ready to diagnose her with this, but it is something he's considering. I discussed it with the speech therapist Bailey sees at the Cleveland Clinic but she seemed to brush it off. Will bring it up again. I go back and forth with it. I think it fits with Bailey's issues pretty well but some of the symptoms - being clumsy and having trouble eating/not like things in your mouth like a tooth brush - don't fit at all. On the flipside, it also calls out issues with fine motor development and she (apparently) does have this. Time will tell. I feel like she is making so much progress but I am noticing people besides Darren, me and our daycare provider have difficulty understanding her. She is the HAPPIEST kid in the world and it breaks my heart that she has such a hard time communicating.

As for Brooklyn, on paper she doesn't have a speech problem. We took her into Cleveland Clinic and she passed. They did not think she needed speech therapy. It's been hard for me to explain the issue with Brooklyn because she CAN talk, she just doesn't. So it was a huge relief when on her IEP that they were able to understand the issue. In their words - she isn't using her speech very functionally. Yes, that is the phrase I needed to explain it! During the one on one evaluation she was able to use words and sentences, etc but in a group setting she clammed up and wouldn't speak, or would barely utter a whisper. She wouldn't ask for things and wouldn't answer anyone. So her treatment will be in a group setting and have more of a social focus. She also scored extremely poor on the fine motor skills (again, I had no idea) so she'll be getting one on one help with this.

The team also had a lot of social concerns about the girls. This did not surprise us. They play so well with each other and us but really don't like people. If another kid comes on the playground they will often freeze. So that's another thing the school will work on with them both.

The other bomb that got dropped during the meeting was the plan to put the girls in separate classes. My mama bear instincts were going full force like absolutely not! They countered with the they are their own person argument. (Trust me, I am well aware of this.) Totally on board with separating them for Kindergarten and beyond. My concerns are that at age 3 that seems soooo young when they are already so shy and don't seem to like other people. They IEP team, however, said that twins with social/speech issues really do so much better being separated so I agreed to it. This makes me a little nervous, but I am hoping each girl will do great and progress quicker. Plus it's only two hours a day.

What's slightly awkward is that the preschool is two hours a day. The kids with special needs are eligible for busing but only within our city. Our daycare is in the neighboring city by seven blocks. No exceptions though. We are lucky that Darren works from home and while not an ideal plan, he can drive them back to daycare after the bus drops them off. I think it's important enough for them to get help.

It was a lot of information crammed into a two hour session. I am really glad the girls will be getting services but also feeling like shitty mom because they are so behind in speech and fine motor. All those guilty mom thoughts rise up like if I wasn't working and was home with them all day or if we read more books or I should have had more fine motor activities and toys for them. And then I think about how ridiculous this all is. It's not like my mom or grandma had 18 fine motor activities from Pinterest laid out each morning. Also, Morgan is doing awesome. She already says: kitty, cheese, down, mom, dad, no, uh oh, oh dear, hi, bye, i love you, and a few more keep coming every couple days. And she's 13 months. Which is crazy early. She has said some sentences too like "hi dad" and "bye dear." So perhaps it's not "shitty mom" and B&B really just have some issues. I'm sure being preemie has contributed some to this, which also packs on the mom guilt. If only I could have stayed pregnant for a couple more weeks, would they have these issues? I don't know. It's not helpful to think that way, but sometimes it can't be helped.

In other news, Bailey is also getting her tonsils and adenoids out so perhaps that will help some with the speech (they were very, very enlarged. She snores like a grown man and has sleep apnea).

We were on walk in the valley and Brooklyn tripped, and face planted. She was crying and had a bloody lip. I took her into the bathroom ad cleaned her up. There was a weird mark on her lip but I couldn't really tell what it was - blood blister? scab? cut? Darren took one look at her and says, "That's a rock." I was a little skeptical. We couldn't wipe it away, and it did feel a little hard, but what was it? (See top left pic)

Anyway, we took the kids for ice cream and she perked up and seemed okay. Put her to bed. She woke up at 10 pm just crying soooo hard and her lip was super swollen. (see top right pic). I was FaceTime calling my parents and my sister to try and figure out if there was something in there. Finally just took her to the ER.

The ER doctor had to give her some baby valium to sedate her some. Then two doctors and a nurse came in to hold her down (mama was crying too) and the one doctor used tweezers and pulled a little pebble out of her lip! It got wedged under the skin.

As soon as it came out (bottom left pic) the swelling went down and she was much happier. Took her home (not stitches!) and put her to bed. She was a little high from the hospital drugs and spent about thirty minutes talking nonsense in her bed which was hysterical. Anyway, she was fine the next day (bottom right).

Finally took B&B in for their first haircut. They were beginning to look like feral urchins but I hated the idea of cutting their hair. Bailey loved her haircut and smiled the entire time. Brooklyn cried the entire time. We had the first dentist appointment a week later and the results were the same ha. One cried and one smiled.

Morgie celebrated her first birthday last month. That came up fast!

She was officially walking for her party, albeit unsteadily. Bailey and Brooklyn like to imitate her and take shaky, unstable steps and fall dramatically into my arms. Hilarious.

Morgan did pretty good with her smash cake. The kid likes sugar, of course.

About a week after the party she was walking pretty regularly, and now walks with no problems. She is also climbing on top of everything (you turn away for one second and she's on top of the picnic table about to leap to her death, laughing hysterically at your panic).

At her one year appointment, she weight in at 23 lbs and height was just shy of 30 inches. Giant baby! (B&B were both 20 lbs 7 oz at one year and about 29 inches).

Only saying "uh oh" at 18/19 months. I know it's fairly common for both twins and preemies to have speech delays, but generally they catch up around age 2. This did not happen. Now the girls are getting close to 3 and I'm starting to be a little more concerned.

Brooklyn seems to have finally caught up with speech but Bailey is still lagging behind. We've been doing the early intervention with the state (Help Me Grow) since they were 18 months. It's nice because it's free and they come to your house. But wanted to get a second opinion and a little extra help so we took them in to get evaluated at the Cleveland Clinic children's rehab center.

Brooklyn passed and didn't need any extra services. This didn't surprise as she's really exploded with words the last month or two. She is putting together sentences just fine and will repeat just about anything. No concerns anymore. She seems to still be a bit behind typical peers, but I know there is a range of normal and she is just on the lower end.

Bailey however needs some extra help. We counted and she can maybe say about 60 or 70 words but it's hard to really accurately count this since so much of what she says is inaudible. Bailey talks a lot, she just drops so many consonants it's difficult to make out a word without context clues. So, when we hold up the "car" flashcard, she can't really say "c" or "r" so she basically just uses the "a." And you know she is trying to say car when holding up the flashcard but if she were to say it without that clue, you wouldn't know what she was saying. It can be frustrating for her, and for us, that she can't communicate what she wants or needs. Even asking for more milk is difficult and usually results in her tugging at the fridge going "uh uh uh" rather than saying "more milk." So the inability to communicate does sometimes result in some tears for Bailey, though this could also just be toddler tears. Bailey CAN say milk, but it comes out sounding the same as mom, moo, and pretty much any m word since she drops the end consonants. Again, without context clues (her standing next to the refrigerator is a safe bet she's asking for milk) you don't really know what she's saying.

What makes it so difficult for Bailey is that her receptive language scores extremely high. She understand everything, she just can't communicate it.

So we are working on getting her to use two word phrases and expand her vocabulary. My Google adventures have pointed me to a lot of theories:
1. She is totally fine and all kids develop at their own pace.
2. As a twin and preemie, it's not super unusual to be behind. She tends to let Brooklyn (who speaks clearer) talk for her.
3. She is a smart kid and picks up that people have trouble understanding her. This makes her try less and use gestures instead to indicate what she wants.
4. Allergies. Bailey had a lot of ear infections last year and has always been a mouth breather. She seems constantly stuffed up. Could allergies be impacting her speech? Could she have fluid trapped in her ears? (We had her hearing tested about six months ago and she did pass that). Based on my Googling, yes, this could be possible. Will discuss this with the doctor and possibly follow up with a pediatric ENT.
5. She just has a speech delay and will catch up with early intervention.

The Help Me Grow program ends at age 3. Both Brooklyn and Bailey have an appointment with our school distract for evaluation to see if they qualify for the preschool program (this would include speech services). My initial thought is that Bailey will qualify and Brooklyn will not. While they do have peer models in the program, it's fairly competitive and I think we missed the timeline on Brooklyn getting in. So that leaves me with the possibility of splitting them up. I don't love this idea. I know a lot of research says it's better to split twins. But that looks at elementary aged children, not a three year old. I think it would not be good for either of them. We'll cross that bridge when and if we get there though. I would hate to deny Bailey a spot in the preschool when it would probably help her tremendously. Things to think about later.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2256680633887350481.post-66405081137670457312016-03-31T08:51:00.000-07:002016-03-31T08:51:09.258-07:00Toddler activities With spring weather still coming and going, I'e been on the hunt for more activities to do with the older girls when we are trapped inside after work or on the weekends. Got a few ideas from Pinterest and hit up the dollar store to get supplies.
Here's a few things we've been doing lately!

1.Matching colored popsicle sticks with colored paper. This kept the girls entertained for a long time. They would sort all the popsicle sticks onto the correct color, and do it again.

2. Gluing random shapes onto paper. Glue sticks have pretty minimal mess too. Added bonus: kept everything contained within this plastic container to make clean up easier.

3. Pipe cleaners. Sticking pipe cleaners into strainers is fun, if you are a toddler. Again, kept them entertained for a long time.
6. This was a Pinterest idea. Looks simple right? Put the paint into a baggie and tape it over a white piece of paper. The writer claimed it would be days of messy-free fun (DAYS she claimed!) We made it about 15 minutes before they ripped the bags open and wanted real painting. Looked cool though, right?
7. The rice table. We used to do this all the time at the daycare where I worked in college at the sensory table. It obviously gets messy but it's a cheap and easy activity that really does keep them interested for a long time. We left this out for a week or so and they kept coming back to it and really having fun. Side note: the baby tried really hard to shove fistfuls of uncooked rice into her mouth.

She has take a couple one step journeys and is walking pretty well with the walker. She's also made it up the stairs on her own (with only a few slips while we follow behind).

So all three kids were throwing up and running temps (fairly high, Bailey hit 103.5). I missed three days of work. The baby literally puked IN MY MOUTH. If they weren't sleeping and puking in their sheets, they were puking on me. You know how sick little kids just want to be held? It was such a violent illness that when they did throw up they didn't even have time to react and it just went all over the both of us. But everyone survived and we are all healthy now. Not surprisingly, I got it over the weekend too. Overall, compared to last year at least, we had a lot less sickness this winter. Spring, go ahead and bring your better weather and relatively healthy atmosphere please.

I have no strategies or survival tips. Stomach flu will win every time. She had her nine month check up and is weighing in at 22 lbs and 1 oz and measuring 29 point something inches which puts her in the 95th percentile for height and the 93rd for weight. She is wearing 12-18 clothes and considering her sisters, who are 21 months older, are still wearing some 24 month clothes, I would say she is going to outgrow them pretty soon. For perspective, Brooklyn and Bailey both weighed 20 lbs 7 oz (same weight) and were nearly 29 inches at ONE YEAR. So she is bigger at nine months than her sisters were at one year. My giant baby!

She also has two teeth officially in on the bottom. B&B didn't get teeth till 13 months. She is also pulling herself up on everything, furniture walking and desperately trying to walk. Probably within the next month.
We also had our first trip to the ER with a kid. Morgan spiked a temp of 104.2 (personal record) and was acting pretty off. Couldn't keep her head up or her eyes open and was breathing funny. We took her to the ER and they did a chest x-ray and diagnosed her with pneumonia. (If you have never seen a baby chest x-ray machine, good lord, Google it. They basically put the baby in a plastic tube that looks like a blender to hold them still.) Got sent home with antibiotics. Then she started throwing up and couldn't keep her meds down, and based on the discharge papers which said to come back if this exact thing happened, we went back to the ER. We were there till 3 am until she could keep liquids down without throwing. They gave her baby zofran (the magical drug used to keep pregnant women from having nausea), Anyway, she's fine now. It was pretty scary though.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2256680633887350481.post-59616427208960558232016-01-12T10:26:00.000-08:002016-01-12T10:26:11.324-08:00The toddler bed switchHow I have been avoiding this moment. But it was finally time. They've been climbing into each other's cribs for a while and have each climbed over and out but we kept putting off the switch. We tried making mega crib for a bit (pushed the two cribs together after taking the sides off) but that resulted in too much wrestling and not enough sleeping.

Anyway, we now have two toddlers in big girl beds. I would warn anyone who makes the switch to expect a couple bad nights but they will get used to it. A lot of people will tell you to make sure that your kids never leave the bed. That's good in theory, but I think when you have twins you have to be realistic. If your best friend was in the bed next to you, you would probably get out and play for a little bit. So we let them run around the room and when they get tired they make their way back to the beds. Sometimes we have to play Sleeping Beauty "I know you" (I have heard this song 10,000 times the past week...) or sing "hush little baby" a few times through the monitor but they have been settling down by 830 or so the past couple nights. With three kids, it seems like someone is always waking up in the night. I'm sure they'll get more used to the toddler beds with time and hopefully sleep till morning without someone waking up!
She is now officially crawling like a Pampers commercial. Somewhat sleeping through the night. Has four teeth on the verge of coming through. Is standing when propped up and trying very, very hard to pull herself upright. She is still the most cuddly, relaxed baby ever. Eating pretty good. Also she is giant. I took her in right after Christmas thinking she had an ear infection (she doesn't, but loves pulling on her ears) and she weighed 21 lbs 2 oz. That's not too far off from her sisters who weighed 25 to 26 lbs at their 2 1/2 year check up. Morgan is going to be so tall!

Brooklyn and Bailey are really cute with Morgan. I love on the weekends when Morgan wakes up from her morning nap and Brooklyn yells "baby up!" and then we all go upstairs to get her and Brooklyn says the entire time, "I come baby! I come baby!" The older girls are both interested in making her laugh but I think they will continue to get more interested when she can really play with them. They are starting to play with her a little (putting the blanket over her to play peekaboo, etc) but it often gets a little rough for the baby and we have to remind them to be careful. Or, Morgan will grab one of their toys or pull their hair which B&B don't care for! But it is cute to see them all interacting in the way that an 8 month old can interact with two toddlers. Melts my heart.
A little late but here is Morgan's seven month photo:

She is saying "mom" and "dada" now and scooting/rolling/backwards crawling all over the place. She can't Pampers commercial crawl yet but she is trying sooo hard. I call it "rev the engine" when they rock back and forth and try to will their body to move forward. She is such a sweet baby. Knock on wood, but she's slept till at least 5:30-6:45 the past week or two. Not having to get up at 4 a.m. is a game changer. I am feeling so much better!

At the well child check up, we learned that they are still little squirts. Brooklyn is 14th percentile for weight (25 lbs 8 oz) and Bailey was in the 18th percentile (26 lbs). Height was a little up in the air as its rather difficult to measure toddlers. They actually shrunk according to the last appointment so my guess is that's not very accurate but it places them under the tenth percentile for height. Consider Morgan's been in the 90th, she is going to pass them up for sure! She was 18 lbs at six months so they aren't even that far apart in weight.

Anyway, here's your fun Brooklyn video for the day. Ketchup good! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QI0dCQZ5Yhw
Our routine is based on total chaos but it's manageable. And crazy. But wonderful.

We try to really take advantage of the weekends and week nights and do fun outdoor things while the weather lets us and it's still light before bedtime. For the most part, it hasn't been a problem. I always wear Morgan in the baby bjorn and as long as she's fed, she is a happy little girl. I stopped breastfeeding a few weeks and am now loving the freedom that comes with formula. I feel good about the time I put in, but I simply couldn't do it any longer. Mamas that make it the full year, I salute you.

So to successfully do any outing (anything more than just a walk or quick park visit), there is so much prep that goes into it. I have to make sure we have the fully loaded diaper bag with snacks and sippy cups, spare clothes, wipes, diapers, a thermos with hot water (Morgan will NOT drink room temp formula), bottles, formula, a cup to pour the water into to heat the bottle, diaper rash cream, etc. And then you get all the coats/sweatshirts and boots/shoes and socks and hats ready. Don't forget the chew toys for the baby and the princess movie DVD for the toddlers. Etc. Etc. Etc. Writing this I feel like it probably doesn't sound like much to pack. But I swear it takes like an hour to get everyone ready and everything packed and out the door. I guess when you factor in keeping three kids alive while packing everything you can see where it gets more complicated. But we've done a lot of fun things this fall so it's all been worth it!

Here's a few things we've done recently:

At six months Brooklyn was 14 lbs 15 oz, 24.75 inches and 15lbs 6 oz and 25 inches for Bailey.

She had her shots today (4 total including the flu shot) and she is not a fan of shots poor thing (who is?). We took B&B in to get the flu shot too. If you've ever take three kids under age three in for a shots, you may feel my pain.

Morgan is such a strong baby. It's interesting to see her hitting all the milestones so early after having preemies. She is already sitting up for a couple minutes without any support. She is always rolling and scooting and is this close to crawling. She is crawling backwards a little too. But by Christmas for sure.

She is finally sleeping through the night most night. Generally from 8 to 6:30, though she usually does have the random cry wake up in the middle of the night (the kind where I wake up, hesitate, debate on getting out of bed, and she stop just as I pull the covers back. Every time!). She still has some random nights where she doesn't sleep great (like last night for example) but overall I feel human and not exhausted every day. I mean, I'm still guzzling coffee. (Side note - graham latte from Starbucks is a tiny piece of heaven.)

Morgan's been eating solids for about a month. So far she's had squash, sweet potatoes, apples, carrots and cauliflower. Going to try eggplant and peaches next. We are only at once a day (she's still spitting up a lot and hit or miss with the feedings).

She is the most mellow happy baby ever I think. What a sweet baby girl.
